Bird with the Crystal Plumage

As the build up to October's festival continues MAYHEM presents:

Two cult classics from the master of Italian horror cinema, the legendary Dario Argento:

BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE (1970) 18

Italy/Germany Tony Musante, Suzy Kendall
FRI 6, 6.30PM

Bird with the Crystal Plumage

Incredible photography from Vittorio Stararo and a great Morricone score, BIRD is simultaneously beautiful and sadistic, a faceless, black gloved killer stalks an art gallery, the witness turned detective must solve the bloody crime before he too becomes a victim. The elaborate, ornate and bizarre collide in what has become a landmark in cinema, Argento's first film and one that Hitchcock himself was scared by, this is a true classic of Giallo filmmaking and one of the most influential psycho-thrillers ever made.

“Sleek, and decidedly modern ... creating a genre all its own.” Cinefantastique

TENEBRE (1982) 18

Italy Anthony Franciosa, John Saxon, Daria Nicolodi
FRI 6, 8.45PM

Tenebre

When horror writer Peter Neal arrives in Rome to promote his new book he is soon witness to a spate of killings seemingly inspired by his work. Perhaps Argento's most complex and most bloodthirsty film, Tenebrae is a monument to minimalist style and extremely gory set pieces, but it is also a subversively twisted treatise on voyeurism and violence. Featuring a great score by prog rockers Goblin. Banned in 1983, presented here uncut and uncensored.

“Tenebrae should ideally be watched in maximum darkness, in a cinema... an astonishing achievement.” Jigsaw Lounge

CONFESSIONS (2010) Japan

FRI 6, 11PM

Confessions

“Manami didn’t die in an accident. She was killed by students in this class.” So begins this incredible film about a grieving school teacher turned cold-blooded avenger. Following the death of her daughter and armed with little evidence she engages in psychological warfare with her entire class in an unhealthy attempt to make them confess. From the director of the cult hits KAMIKAZE GIRLS and MEMORIES OF MATSUKO.

“Confessions will bruise and batter you... Heavy with violent and shocking symbolism, this is not a film to be taken lightly.” Little White Lies
